Construction de Réseaux d'Ordre Supérieur à partir de Traces : Méthodes et Outils

Les réseaux d'ordre supérieur sont une classe de réseaux qui intègrent des "noeuds-mémoires" afin de prendre en compte les interactions pouvant exister dans des données séquentielles, par opposition aux réseaux dits d'"ordre 1" qui ne prennent en compte que les relations directes. Dans cet article, nous donnons un aperçu de ce concept en détaillant leur construction et les techniques de fouille qui peuvent être employées. Nous proposons un didacticiel sur un cas d'étude utilisant une implémentation de notre part des algorithmes présents dans la littérature. Nous abordons également certains des défis et des orientations futures dans ce domaine.

Chaînes relationnelles dans l'accès à l'emploi : perspective à partir d'une enquête récente en France

Depuis le travail fondateur de Mark Granovetter sur l’accès à l’emploi de cadres de la banlieue de Boston, les études sur l’encastrement du marché du travail dans les réseaux sociaux se sont multipliées. Toutes convergent sur le constat qu’une part importante des accès à l’emploi s’appuie sur des relations interpersonnelles, soit que ces relations soient décisives dans l’obtention d’informations sur les postes (pour les futures personnes recrutées) et sur les candidatures possibles (pour les personnes qui recrutent), soit qu’elles débouchent sur des recrutements directs (si les personnes concernées se connaissent déjà) ou que des recommandations par des intermédiaires aboutissent à l’embauche. La proportion des emplois obtenus sur la base de relations personnelles varie selon les méthodes étudiées et les terrains d’étude mais elle est souvent importante. Dans cet article, nous étudions les chaînes relationnelles d’accès à l’emploi à partir d’une enquête par questionnaire effectuée en 2018 au-près d’un échantillon de 1676 personnes représentatives de la population résidant en France métropolitaine. L’analyse de ces données con-firme l’importance des chaînes de relations dans l’accès à l’emploi en France, avec des variations selon les caractéristiques des personnes, les plus diplômées mobilisant les relations plus que les autres. Cette analyse porte également sur la longueur des chaînes, qui varie en fonction de la rareté relative des ressources ainsi que des caractéristiques des personnes cherchant un emploi.

Deux Schémas de Stéganographie Textuelles basés sur le codage des couleurs.

La stéganographie textuelle est un mécanisme permettant de cacher un message secret dans un texte. Dans ce papier, nous proposons un schéma stéganographique basé sur le codage de couleurs. Ce schéma comprend deux méthodes différentes : la première, basée sur les permutations et la seconde, basée sur les systèmes de numération. Etant donné un message secret et un texte de couverture, les méthodes proposées cachent le message secret dans le texte de couverture en le coloriant. Le stégo-texte est ensuite envoyé au destinataire par mail. Après expérimentations, les résultats obtenus montrent que nos modèles proposent un meilleure capacité d'embarquement par rapport au schéma d'Aruna Malik et al. sur laquelle repose notre idée.

Application du modèle de représentation acoustique multilingue XLSR pour la transcription de l'Ewondo

Les modèles auto-supervisés récemment popularisés apparaissent comme une solution au problème de la faible disponibilité des données grâce à un transfert d'apprentissage parcimonieux. Nous étudions l'efficacité de ces modèles acoustiques multilingues, en l'occurrence wav2vec 2.0 XLSR-53 et wav2vec 2.0 XLSR-128, pour la tâche de transcription de la langue Ewondo (parlée au Cameroun). Les expériences ont été menées sur 11 minutes de discours construits à partir de 103 phrases lues. Malgré une forte capacité de généralisation du modèle acoustique multilingue, les résultats préliminaires montrent que la distance entre les langues intégrées dans le XLSR (anglais, français, espagnol, allemand, mandarin, . . .) et l'ewondo a un impact important sur la performance du modèle de transcription. Les performances les plus élevées obtenues sont de l'ordre de 69% pour le WER et de 28.1% pour le CER. Une analyse de ces résultats préliminaires est effectuée et interprétée afin de proposer des pistes d'amélioration efficaces.

L’approvisionnement en molasse dans les bâtiments savoyards du bord du Léman au Moyen Âge : l’exemple du château de Ripaille

L’approvisionnement en molasse (grès tendre à ciment calcaire) est cité dans les comptes du château de Ripaille (Haute-Savoie). En étudiant l’évolution architecturale du château, les caractéristiques géologiques de la molasse dans la région, les aspects techniques et les informations sur les carrières, il est possible de reconstituer le travail des artisans et l’organisation des approvisionnements et du chantier. Depuis l’extraction et la pré-taille dans les carrières subaquatiques du lac Léman, les pierres sont transportées par voie d’eau puis par route. La molasse, bien que facile à extraire et à façonner, est une pierre de construction de piètre qualité car le ciment calcaire est peu cristallisé et la roche est poreuse et sensible aux intempéries. C’était cependant un matériau de prédilection au Moyen Âge en raison de sa facilité de mise en œuvre contrairement aux calcaires plus durs, pourtant fréquents et disponibles dans la région.

Nous entrerons dans la carrière quand nos aînés n'y seront plus. Difficultés de découverte, de datation et d'interprétation des carrières médiévales en Lorraine

Terre de pierre, l'espace lorrain reste marqué par l'empreinte de carrières à ciel ouvert dont les dimensions reflètent les apports de la mécanisation au travail d'extraction à partir du XIXe siècle. Pour autant, nombre de carrières plus anciennes se cachent encore dans le paysage. Bien souvent très discrètes, remblayées, leur identification n'est pas toujours aisée, particulièrement celles du Moyen Âge, où les sites d'extractions sont très circonstanciés à l'ouverture d'un chantier de construction. Ce bilan et cette enquête nous mènent donc sur le terrain des petites exploitations médiévales, en tentant de répondre à des problématiques méthodologiques aussi bien que scientifiques.

How Books Tell a History of Statistics in Portugal: Works of Foreigners, Estrangeirados, and Others

Foreigners and "estrangeirados", an expression meaning "people going to a foreign country ["estrangeiro"] getting there further education", had a leading role in the development of Mathematical Statistics in Portugal. In what concerns Statistics, "estrangeirados" in the nineteenth century were mainly liberal intellectuals exiled for political reasons. From 1930 onwards, the research funding authority sent university professors abroad, and hired foreign researchers to stay in Portuguese institutions, and some of them were instrumental in the importation of new concepts and methods of inferential statistics. After 1970, there was a huge program of sending young researchers abroad for doctoral studies. At the same time, many new universities and polytechnic institutes have been created in Portugal. After that, aside from foreigners who choose to have a research career in those institutions and the "estrangeirados" who had returned and created programs of doctoral studies, others, who hadn't the opportunity of studying abroad, began to play a decisive role in the development of Statistics in Portugal. The publication of handbooks on Probability and Statistics, thesis and core papers in Portuguese scientific journals, and also of works for the layman, reveals how Statistics progressed from descriptive to a mathematical discipline used for inference in all fields of knowledge, from natural sciences to methodology of scientific research.

Homotopy Theoretic and Categorical Models of Neural Information Networks

In this paper we develop a novel mathematical formalism for the modeling of neural information networks endowed with additional structure in the form of assignments of resources, either computational or metabolic or informational. The starting point for this construction is the notion of summing functors and of Segal's Gamma-spaces in homotopy theory. The main results in this paper include functorial assignments of concurrent/distributed computing architectures and associated binary codes to networks and their subsystems, a categorical form of the Hopfield network dynamics, which recovers the usual Hopfield equations when applied to a suitable category of weighted codes, a functorial assignment to networks of corresponding information structures and information cohomology, and a cohomological version of integrated information.

A Framework for Universality in Physics, Computer Science, and Beyond

Turing machines and spin models share a notion of universality according to which some simulate all others. Is there a theory of universality that captures this notion? We set up a categorical framework for universality which includes as instances universal Turing machines, universal spin models, NP completeness, top of a preorder, denseness of a subset, and more. By identifying necessary conditions for universality, we show that universal spin models cannot be finite. We also characterize when universality can be distinguished from a trivial one and use it to show that universal Turing machines are non-trivial in this sense. Our framework allows not only to compare universalities within each instance, but also instances themselves. We leverage a Fixed Point Theorem inspired by a result of Lawvere to establish that universality and negation give rise to unreachability (such as uncomputability). As such, this work sets the basis for a unified approach to universality and invites the study of further examples within the framework.

Des petits ports aux grands ports : une perspective historique de la hiérarchisation des ports à Madagascar

Dans les pays qui disposent de nombreux ports, l'importance des investissement requis, particulièrement face aux enjeux du changement climatique, peut conduire à hiérarchiser les ports en « grands ports » et « petits ports » et à recourir aux financements privés dans de nouvelles formes de partenariats. Documentant cette problématique, l'article s'intéresse au cas des ports dans un pays en développement, Madagascar, aux ressources contraintes, pour montrer comment la rareté des ressources induit une forte hiérarchisation des ports et le recours aux financements alternatifs disponibles, la privatisation. L'article alimente donc une littérature déjà riche sur la gouvernance portuaire en s'appuyant sur une étude longitudinale, depuis les premiers échanges référencés jusqu'à nos jours, de la gouvernance des ports à Madagascar. Cette perspective met en évidence la permanence historique des débats autour du financement de nombreux ports, et la forte hiérarchisation portuaire qui s'ensuit dans un contexte de rareté des ressources. Elle montre également le caractère opportuniste de la gouvernance dès lors que les autorités préfèrent, lorsqu'elles le peuvent, maintenir le fonctionnement d'un nombre maximum de ports. Dans le contexte du renchérissement de l'investissement portuaire dans les années à venir, ce cheminement historique suggère qu'en Europe, le degré de privatisation des ports pourrait augmenter, et la sélection des ports privilégiés bénéficiant d'investissements importants, s'accroître.

Techniques d’inspection à distance dans les ports scandinaves de petite et moyenne taille

Au cours des dernières années, l’utilisation des techniques d’inspection à distance (RIT), y compris les véhicules aériens sans pilote (UAV) et les véhicules télécommandés (ROV), a pris une ampleur considérable dans le secteur maritime. Aujourd’hui, les techniques d’inspection à distance sont largement exploitées à des fins d’inspection et de maintenance des navires,révolutionnant ainsi les pratiques conventionnelles et établissant une nouvelle référence dans l’industrie. Dans ce contexte, ces technologies apparaissent clairement comme des outils indispensables à la modernisation des opérations portuaires. En exploitant efficacement ces technologies, les ports peuvent réaliser des progrès remarquables en matière de sécurité, de sûreté, d’efficacité et de durabilité. Cet article vise à examiner dans quelle mesure les ports de petite et moyenne taille en Scandinavie utilisent les technologies de l’information et de la communication pour les opérations portuaires au sol et la navigation maritime. Pour ce faire,il s’appuie sur les conclusions d’un groupe de discussion avec dix-sept agents de sûreté des installations portuaires (PFSO) en Scandinavie qui font référence à l’étendue de l’utilisation de ces technologies dans les ports. Des recommandations pour l’utilisation des technologies de l’information et de la communication dans les ports sont ensuite présentées, compte tenu de la nécessité de réviser le Code international pour la sûreté des navires et des installations portuaires (ISPS) afin de prendre en compte l'application des drones dans la gestion de la sécurité portuaire.

Spanning trees for many different numbers of leaves

Let $G$ be a connected graph and $L(G)$ the set of all integers $k$ such that $G$ contains a spanning tree with exactly $k$ leaves. We show that for a connected graph $G$, the set $L(G)$ is contiguous. It follows from work of Chen, Ren, and Shan that every connected and locally connected $n$-vertex graph -- this includes triangulations -- has a spanning tree with at least $n/2 + 1$ leaves, so by a classic theorem of Whitney and our result, in any plane $4$-connected $n$-vertex triangulation one can find for any integer $k$ which is at least $2$ and at most $n/2 + 1$ a spanning tree with exactly $k$ leaves (and each of these trees can be constructed in polynomial time). We also prove that there exist infinitely many $n$ such that there is a plane $4$-connected $n$-vertex triangulation containing a spanning tree with $2n/3$ leaves, but no spanning tree with more than $2n/3$ leaves.

Recognition of chordal graphs and cographs which are Cover-Incomparability graphs

Cover-Incomparability graphs (C-I graphs) are an interesting class of graphs from posets. A C-I graph is a graph from a poset $P=(V,\le)$ with vertex set $V$, and the edge-set is the union of edge sets of the cover graph and the incomparability graph of the poset. The recognition of the C-I graphs is known to be NP-complete (Maxov\'{a} et al., Order 26(3), 229--236(2009)). In this paper, we prove that chordal graphs having at most two independent simplicial vertices are exactly the chordal graphs which are also C-I graphs. A similar result is obtained for cographs as well. Using the structural results of these graphs, we derive linear time recognition algorithms for chordal graphs and cographs which are C-I graphs.

Potentiel des biochars à base de résidus agricoles pour le traitement des eaux usées domestiques par filtres à flux verticaux plantés d'Echinochloa pyramidalis

Le traitement des eaux usées domestiques par filtres plantés est proposé comme une alternative adaptée aux conditions socio-économiques des pays en voie de développement. L’utilisation du biochar dans ces filtres en substitution partielle ou totale des massifs filtrants classiques était au centre de la présente étude. L’efficacité épuratoire de trois biochars produits à partir de chacun des trois résidus végétaux (les rafles de maïs, les coques de noix de coco, et les coques de noix de palmiste) pour l’amélioration des performances épuratoires des filtres à flux vertical plantés de roseaux a été étudiée ici. Le dispositif expérimental était constitué de trois filtres à biochars répliqués trois fois et de trois filtres té-moins alimentés à 142 l/m2/jr. Les caractéristiques physico-chimiques des eaux ont été mesurées à 30 puis 60 jours depuis le début de l’essai ; les paramètres physiques de croissance des plantes mesurées toutes les semaines entre le 30e et le 60e jour soit 4 fois. Les résultats révèlent une augmentation du pH, une amélioration de la réduction de la teneur en azote, fer, phosphore et des microbes dans les filtres à biochar comparé aux filtres à sable classiques. Globalement, le filtre avec biochar de rafles de maïs a permis d’obtenir de meilleurs résultats au bout de deux mois. Il reste opportun pour les prochaines études de faire le suivi des paramètres sur une plus longue durée et de tester l’effet de la combinaison des trois biochars.

Méthode de quantification des flux des mines urbaines : cas des briques en terre cuite en Ile de France

Le secteur du bâtiment est un grand consommateur de ressources et producteur de déchets. Dans un contexte d’épuisement des ressources, on peut imaginer qu’il devra mettre en place des stratégies pour devenir davantage circulaire. Une solution possible est d’avoir recours aux mines urbaines, c’est-à-dire, de voir les bâtiments existants comme un gisement de ressources disponibles pour les futurs constructions ou rénovations du parc immobilier lors de leur déconstruction ou rénovation. Cet article propose une méthode pour mettre en relation des quantités de matériaux issus de la déconstruction et de la rénovation avec les besoins du secteur du bâtiment neuf ou de la rénovation. Après leur extraction des mines urbaines, les éléments de construction peuvent convenir à divers usages secondaires. Les usages possibles en sortie des filières de réemploi, réutilisation et de recyclage sont identifiés et les quantités de matériaux répondant à chacun de ceux-ci sont déterminés avec des unités adéquates (m2, kg…). Ces unités facilitent la comparaison entre les matériaux valorisés et la demande. La méthode se veut prospective en considérant comme hypothèse que l’économie circulaire est pleinement développée et que l’accent n’est mis que sur la faisabilité technique des modes de valorisation. Afin d’illustrer la méthode, le cas des briques en terre cuite en Ile-de-France est développé. Durant l’année 2020, 153 kt de briques en terre cuite ont été produites par la démolition de bâtiments sur ce territoire, permettant d’obtenir au maximum (et sous réserve d’une bonne qualité de tri et des matériaux déconstruits), une surface de plus de 21 000 m2 de parois en briques de maçonnerie, par exemple, et 9,2 kt de granulats destinés à la fabrication de béton.

Profinite lambda-terms and parametricity

Combining ideas coming from Stone duality and Reynolds parametricity, we formulate in a clean and principled way a notion of profinite lambda-term which, we show, generalizes at every type the traditional notion of profinite word coming from automata theory. We start by defining the Stone space of profinite lambda-terms as a projective limit of finite sets of usual lambda-terms, considered modulo a notion of equivalence based on the finite standard model. One main contribution of the paper is to establish that, somewhat surprisingly, the resulting notion of profinite lambda-term coming from Stone duality lives in perfect harmony with the principles of Reynolds parametricity. In addition, we show that the notion of profinite lambda-term is compositional by constructing a cartesian closed category of profinite lambda-terms, and we establish that the embedding from lambda-terms modulo beta-eta-conversion to profinite lambda-terms is faithful using Statman's finite completeness theorem. Finally, we prove that the traditional Church encoding of finite words into lambda-terms can be extended to profinite words, and leads to a homeomorphism between the space of profinite words and the space of profinite lambda-terms of the corresponding Church type.

Dependent Type Refinements for Futures

Type refinements combine the compositionality of typechecking with the expressivity of program logics, offering a synergistic approach to program verification. In this paper we apply dependent type refinements to SAX, a futures-based process calculus that arises from the Curry-Howard interpretation of the intuitionistic semi-axiomatic sequent calculus and includes unrestricted recursion both at the level of types and processes. With our type refinement system, we can reason about the partial correctness of SAX programs, complementing prior work on sized type refinements that supports reasoning about termination. Our design regime synthesizes the infinitary proof theory of SAX with that of bidirectional typing and Hoare logic, deriving some standard reasoning principles for data and (co)recursion while enabling information hiding for codata. We prove syntactic type soundness, which entails a notion of partial correctness that respects codata encapsulation. We illustrate our language through a few simple examples.

Quelle est la place des exemples dans l'enseignement de l'algèbre abstraite ?

Enseigner l'algèbre abstraite, vue comme l'étude des structures et des propriétés des structures, à un niveau universitaire apparaît être un challenge pour les corps étudiant et professoral. Les professeurs de notre étude décrivent ce passage à travers l'abstraction pour le corps étudiant comme un « jeu de massacre », un « mur infranchissable » ou encore « un saut à travers l'abstraction ». Dans cet article, en appui sur une étude de cas (Candy, 2020) nous allons étudier les choix de professeurs enseignant l'algèbre abstraite à l'université. Ces professeurs ont été choisis car ils enseignent l'algèbre abstraite à l'université en France, de plus ils nous ont donné accès à leur corpus de cours et ont accepté d'être interviewés. Dans cet article, nous choisirons d'étudier en particulier l'enseignement du concept d'idéal. Une analyse épistémologique nous permettra de mettre en évidence son rôle central dans la construction de l'algèbre abstraite. Puis, en utilisant la théorie anthropologique du didactique (Chevallard, 1998), nous chercherons à préciser la place des exemples et exercices dans la praxis du corps étudiant.

The integral is one of the most important topics in Calculus that is difficult to be understood by many students. When solving definite integral application problems, previous research emphasizes that students found the antiderivative procedure more useful and easier than the approximation process or area (Akrouti, 2020). This paper focuses on students' conceptions of the definite integral in the first year of preparatory class. Data were collected from students' written responses to questions that relate to their views of integration. The analysis shows that the majority of students choose the algebraic process to evaluate the proposed integrals. Participants were first-semester calculus students enrolled in a public university.

Deformations of some local Calabi-Yau manifolds

We study deformations of certain crepant resolutions of isolated rational Gorenstein singularities. After a general discussion of the deformation theory, we specialize to dimension $3$ and consider examples which are good (log) resolutions as well as the case of small resolutions. We obtain some partial results on the classification of canonical threefold singularities that admit good crepant resolutions. Finally, we study a noncrepant example, the blowup of a small resolution whose exceptional set is a smooth curve.

Logarithmic resolution via multi-weighted blow-ups

We first introduce and study the notion of multi-weighted blow-ups, which is later used to systematically construct an explicit yet efficient algorithm for functorial logarithmic resolution in characteristic zero, in the sense of Hironaka. Specifically, for a singular, reduced closed subscheme $X$ of a smooth scheme $Y$ over a field of characteristic zero, we resolve the singularities of $X$ by taking proper transforms $X_i \subset Y_i$ along a sequence of multi-weighted blow-ups $Y_N \to Y_{N-1} \to \dotsb \to Y_0 = Y$ which satisfies the following properties: (i) the $Y_i$ are smooth Artin stacks with simple normal crossing exceptional loci; (ii) at each step we always blow up the worst singular locus of $X_i$, and witness on $X_{i+1}$ an immediate improvement in singularities; (iii) and finally, the singular locus of $X$ is transformed into a simple normal crossing divisor on $X_N$.

Proving Confluence in the Confluence Framework with CONFident

This article describes the *Confluence Framework*, a novel framework for proving and disproving confluence using a divide-and-conquer modular strategy, and its implementation in CONFident. Using this approach, we are able to automatically prove and disprove confluence of *Generalized Term Rewriting Systems*, where (i) only selected arguments of function symbols can be rewritten and (ii) a rather general class of conditional rules can be used. This includes, as particular cases, several variants of rewrite systems such as (context-sensitive) *term rewriting systems*, *string rewriting systems*, and (context-sensitive) *conditional term rewriting systems*. The divide-and-conquer modular strategy allows us to combine in a proof tree different techniques for proving confluence, including modular decompositions, checking joinability of (conditional) critical and variable pairs, transformations, etc., and auxiliary tasks required by them, e.g., joinability of terms, joinability of conditional pairs, etc.

On Complexity Bounds and Confluence of Parallel Term Rewriting

We revisit parallel-innermost term rewriting as a model of parallel computation on inductive data structures and provide a corresponding notion of runtime complexity parametric in the size of the start term. We propose automatic techniques to derive both upper and lower bounds on parallel complexity of rewriting that enable a direct reuse of existing techniques for sequential complexity. Our approach to find lower bounds requires confluence of the parallel-innermost rewrite relation, thus we also provide effective sufficient criteria for proving confluence. The applicability and the precision of the method are demonstrated by the relatively light effort in extending the program analysis tool AProVE and by experiments on numerous benchmarks from the literature.

CLASS NUMBER FORMULAS FOR CERTAIN BIQUADRATIC FIELDS

We consider the class numbers of imaginary quadratic extensions $F(\sqrt{-p})$, for certain primes $p$, of totally real quadratic fields $F$ which have class number one. Using seminal work of Shintani, we obtain two elementary class number formulas for many such fields. The first expresses the class number as an alternating sum of terms that we generate from the coefficients of the power series expansions of two simple rational functions that depend on the arithmetic of $F$ and $p$. The second makes use of expansions of $1/p$, where $p$ is a prime such that $p \equiv 3 \pmod{4}$ and $p$ remains inert in $F$. More precisely, for a generator $\varepsilon_F$ of the totally positive unit group of $\mathcal{O}_F$, the base-$\varepsilon_{F}$ expansion of $1/p$ has period length $\ell_{F,p}$, and our second class number formula expresses the class number as a finite sum over disjoint cosets of size $\ell_{F,p}$.

Reliable Part-of-Speech Tagging of Historical Corpora through Set-Valued Prediction

Syntactic annotation of corpora in the form of part-of-speech (POS) tags is a key requirement for both linguistic research and subsequent automated natural language processing (NLP) tasks. This problem is commonly tackled using machine learning methods, i.e., by training a POS tagger on a sufficiently large corpus of labeled data. While the problem of POS tagging can essentially be considered as solved for modern languages, historical corpora turn out to be much more difficult, especially due to the lack of native speakers and sparsity of training data. Moreover, most texts have no sentences as we know them today, nor a common orthography. These irregularities render the task of automated POS tagging more difficult and error-prone. Under these circumstances, instead of forcing the POS tagger to predict and commit to a single tag, it should be enabled to express its uncertainty. In this paper, we consider POS tagging within the framework of set-valued prediction, which allows the POS tagger to express its uncertainty via predicting a set of candidate POS tags instead of guessing a single one. The goal is to guarantee a high confidence that the correct POS tag is included while keeping the number of candidates small. In our experimental study, we find that extending state-of-the-art POS taggers to set-valued prediction yields more precise and robust taggings, especially for unknown words, i.e., words not occurring in the training data.

Temporal Sequencing of Documents

We outline an unsupervised method for temporal rank ordering of sets of historical documents, namely American State of the Union Addresses and DEEDS, a corpus of medieval English property transfer documents. Our method relies upon effectively capturing the gradual change in word usage via a bandwidth estimate for the non-parametric Generalized Linear Models (Fan, Heckman, and Wand, 1995). The number of possible rank orders needed to search through for cost functions related to the bandwidth can be quite large, even for a small set of documents. We tackle this problem of combinatorial optimization using the Simulated Annealing algorithm, which allows us to obtain the optimal document temporal orders. Our rank ordering method significantly improved the temporal sequencing of both corpora compared to a randomly sequenced baseline. This unsupervised approach should enable the temporal ordering of undated document sets.

Computing the unit group of a commutative finite $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra

For a commutative finite $\mathbb{Z}$-algebra, i.e., for a commutative ring $R$ whose additive group is finitely generated, it is known that the group of units of $R$ is finitely generated, as well. Our main results are algorithms to compute generators and the structure of this group. This is achieved by reducing the task first to the case of reduced rings, then to torsion-free reduced rings, and finally to an order in a reduced ring. The simplified cases are treated via a calculation of exponent lattices and various algorithms to compute the minimal primes, primitive idempotents, and other basic objects. All algorithms have been implemented and are available as a SageMath package. Whenever possible, the time complexity of the described methods is tracked carefully.

Espaces odorants et espaces olfactifs

Attester le partage d'une expérience olfactive par plusieurs individus est une gageure, du fait d'obstacles théoriques et méthodologiques souvent présentés comme irréductibles. Après une brève discussion de la réalité de cette irréductibilité, nous essayons de surmonter certains de ces obstacles en distinguant espaces odorants et espaces olfactifs. Si un espace odorant peut-être objectivé et donc partagé, il n'en va pas de même d'un espace olfactif qui relève d'une expérience subjective. Cependant, l'effet invasif des molécules odorantes, plus spécifiquement celles qui provoquent des « mauvaises odeurs », est de nature à atténuer cette subjectivité et, du même coup, à faciliter le partage d'un espace olfactif. Notre argumentation prend appui sur des enquêtes ethnographiques menées au Brésil, en Chine et en Inde et sur une recherche menée en géographie sur la spatialisation des nuisances olfactives.

In this paper, we consider optimization problems with $L^0$-cost of the controls. Here, we take the support of the control as independent optimization variable. Topological derivatives of the corresponding value function with respect to variations of the support are derived. These topological derivatives are used in a novel gradient descent algorithm with Armijo line-search. Under suitable assumptions, the algorithm produces a minimizing sequence.

Local properties and augmented Lagrangians in fully nonconvex composite optimization

A broad class of optimization problems can be cast in composite form, that is, considering the minimization of the composition of a lower semicontinuous function with a differentiable mapping. This paper investigates the versatile template of composite optimization without any convexity assumptions. First- and second-order optimality conditions are discussed. We highlight the difficulties that stem from the lack of convexity when dealing with necessary conditions in a Lagrangian framework and when considering error bounds. Building upon these characterizations, a local convergence analysis is delineated for a recently developed augmented Lagrangian method, deriving rates of convergence in the fully nonconvex setting.

The Interdisciplinary Research Programme of Methodological Individualism: Back to Its Foundations

According to methodological individualism any scientific explanation in the social sciences should have recourse to individual beliefs, wishes, intentions and actions. This article sets forth two practical reasons to endorse a clear-cut, classical version of methodological individualism as a research programme in the social sciences. The first one is that methodological individualism should lead to fundamental heuristic hypotheses. The second reason is that methodological individualism has the epistemological strength of producing statements open to logical refutation.The present article questions highly sophisticated accounts of methodological individualism. It suggests instead four tenets to be a valid research programme in the social sciences underscoring an intuitive language to analyze social phenomena. By doing so, it reviews some distinctive features of methodological individualism: Max Weber’s ideal types, Joseph Schumpeter’s notion of given behaviour, Friedrich Hayek’s concept of individual action and Jon Elster’s account of explanatory mechanisms.

A review of the coupled criterion

We provide a review of recent works about the Coupled Criterion (CC), originally developed to assess the initiation of a crack and thus overcome a main limitation of linear elastic fracture mechanics. This paper includes theoretical and implementation aspects of the CC, new fundamental developments such as extensions to 3D, dynamic aspects, nonlinearities or fatigue. It also focuses on confrontations between the CC and other fracture modeling approaches such as cohesive zone models or phase field approach for fracture. Originally developed in 2D, for linear elastic materials under the assumption of small deformations, the CC has now expanded and can be applied to a wide range of applications from macroscopic to atomic scale.

Deformation and cavitation at the spherulite scale of an isotactic polypropylene

Engineering stress-strain curves are generated from tensile tests on semi-crystalline thermoplastics, which may exhibit non-linearity and/or peak stress associated with striction/necking phenomenon of the specimen at the macroscopic scale. This work addresses this state of deformed specimen, on an isotactic polypropylene, where irreversible strains have led to a variable cross-sectional area along the necked region. 3D images in this region, obtained through Synchrotron Radiation Computed Tomography with two high resolutions are exploited. The best resolution (1 pixel length = 0.05 μm) allowed better understanding of the morphology of several deformed spherulites within which polar fan arrangements are clearly detailed. Thanks to the dentification of the boundaries of spherulite patterns, with a 0.7 μm resolution, the longitudinal and transverse elongations of larger numbers of spherulites are measured. The evolution of the volumetric plastic strains due to cavitation at the spherulitic scale along the necked regions is comprehensively analysed. Volume changes at this scale are highlighted, consisting of an increase in the case of void growth followed by a decrease at large strains due to the collapse of elongated voids. The effects of these results on the establishment of reliable constitutive model are discussed. It is found that accounting for plastic dilation is necessary for the accuracy of constitutive models.

A Calculus for Scoped Effects & Handlers

Algebraic effects & handlers have become a standard approach for side-effects in functional programming. Their modular composition with other effects and clean separation of syntax and semantics make them attractive to a wide audience. However, not all effects can be classified as algebraic; some need a more sophisticated handling. In particular, effects that have or create a delimited scope need special care, as their continuation consists of two parts-in and out of the scope-and their modular composition introduces additional complexity. These effects are called scoped and have gained attention by their growing applicability and adoption in popular libraries. While calculi have been designed with algebraic effects & handlers built in to facilitate their use, a calculus that supports scoped effects & handlers in a similar manner does not yet exist. This work fills this gap: we present $\lambda_{\mathit{sc}}$, a calculus with native support for both algebraic and scoped effects & handlers. It addresses the need for polymorphic handlers and explicit clauses for forwarding unknown scoped operations to other handlers. Our calculus is based on Eff, an existing calculus for algebraic effects, extended with Koka-style row polymorphism, and consists of a formal grammar, operational semantics, a (type-safe) type-and-effect system and type inference. We demonstrate $\lambda_{\mathit{sc}}$ on a range of examples.

Refl-Spanners: A Purely Regular Approach to Non-Regular Core Spanners

The regular spanners (characterised by vset-automata) are closed under the algebraic operations of union, join and projection, and have desirable algorithmic properties. The core spanners (introduced by Fagin, Kimelfeld, Reiss, and Vansummeren (PODS 2013, JACM 2015) as a formalisation of the core functionality of the query language AQL used in IBM's SystemT) additionally need string-equality selections and it has been shown by Freydenberger and Holldack (ICDT 2016, Theory of Computing Systems 2018) that this leads to high complexity and even undecidability of the typical problems in static analysis and query evaluation. We propose an alternative approach to core spanners: by incorporating the string-equality selections directly into the regular language that represents the underlying regular spanner (instead of treating it as an algebraic operation on the table extracted by the regular spanner), we obtain a fragment of core spanners that, while having slightly weaker expressive power than the full class of core spanners, arguably still covers the intuitive applications of string-equality selections for information extraction and has much better upper complexity bounds of the typical problems in static analysis and query evaluation.

Neural Coding as a Statistical Testing Problem

We take the testing perspective to understand what the minimal discrimination time between two stimuli is for different types of rate coding neurons. Our main goal is to describe the testing abilities of two different encoding systems: place cells and grid cells. In particular, we show, through the notion of adaptation, that a fixed place cell system can have a minimum discrimination time that decreases when the stimuli are further away. This could be a considerable advantage for the place cell system that could complement the grid cell system, which is able to discriminate stimuli that are much closer than place cells.

Impacts des grands événements sportifs internationaux : points de repères et controverses

Paris 2024 ambitionne d’établir un nouveau modèle de grand événement sportif international (GESI) durable en s’appuyant sur l’agenda 2020+5. En plaçant les Jeux sous l’angle d’un projet de société ambitieux, les organisateurs suscitent beaucoup d’espérance sur de nombreuses dimensions (touristiques, économiques, sociales), alors que les précédentes olympiades ainsi que le grand nombre d’inconnues liées à la candidature puis à l’organisation pourrait justifier la prudence. Précisément, la littérature académique se caractérise par une approche nuancée des impacts des événements sportifs. En effet, la prégnance actuelle de la notion d’héritage ne doit pas occulter des décennies de recherche scientifique sur la complexité de chacune des dimensions censées la constituer. Nous proposons ici une revue de littérature de ces travaux qui portent sur la mesure, l’analyse ou l’évaluation des impacts économiques, sociaux, touristiques et environnementaux. Ils se caractérisent par une forme de complexité et sont grevés d’effets contre-intuitifs qui doivent être appréhendés pour saisir le potentiel rôle structurant de l’événement sur son territoire hôte. Cette contribution ambitionne de donner des clefs de compréhension aux chercheurs ou aux étudiants qui s’intéressent à ces questions de l’impact des événements sportifs car malgré les difficultés méthodologiques qui jalonnent cette thématique, les GESI restent de précieux révélateurs des dynamiques démocratiques, sociétales et politiques à l’œuvre dans nos sociétés.

La science dérange-t-elle les managers ?: Retour sur la construction, la diffusion et la réception des savoirs dans la distribution d’articles et de services sportifs

En France, depuis la loi du 16 novembre 2001 relative à la lutte contre les discriminations, « aucune personne ne peut être écartée d’une procédure de recrutement (…) en raison (…) de son âge (…) de son sexe (…) et de son apparence physique ». Pourtant, et malgré l’existence de ce cadre législatif antidiscriminatoire, les discriminations à l’embauche persistent. Sept enquêtes menées depuis plus d’une quinzaine d’années ont permis de mettre au jour les mécanismes sociologiques qui contribuent aux processus de discrimination selon ces trois motifs dans un secteur d’activités qui constitue un gisement d’emplois pour les étudiants issus des Sciences et Techniques des Activités Physiques et Sportives (STAPS) - les entreprises pratiquant le commerce d’articles et de services sportifs dans des grandes et/ou moyennes surfaces de vente, sous la forme du libre-service, comme Décathlon, Sport 2000, Intersport, etc. Les résultats produits ont fait l’objet de publications et de communications scientifiques, mais la conduite de recherches sur ce terrain en plusieurs points « sensible » méritait un développement autonome, notamment sur la position ambivalente des managers de ce secteur d’activités à l’égard de la science. Encouragé par les appels à l’introspection et les gains offerts par la réflexivité en sciences sociales du sport, ce récit d’enquête permet de revenir a posteriori sur les expériences de terrain, heureuses ou malheureuses, et d’ouvrir la réflexion sur la circulation des savoirs dans la distribution dite sportive. L’examen du contexte, de l’identité de la chercheuse et de l’instrumentalisation possible de son travail scientifique permet d’expliquer la construction difficile de zones d’intéressement favorables entre les scientifiques et les managers de ce secteur d’activités. L’analyse des entêtements et des renoncements opérés sur le plan scientifique dévoile à son tour les obstacles à la traduction et à la restitution des savoirs produits. Enfin, la manière dont les managers se saisissent - ou non - des savoirs produits et en font - ou non - usage, permet de révéler les mécanismes qui expliquent les fortunes et infortunes pratiques des savoirs produits en management du sport.

Kontsevich's star-product up to order 7 for affine Poisson brackets: where are the Riemann zeta values?

The Kontsevich star-product admits a well-defined restriction to the class of affine -- in particular, linear -- Poisson brackets; its graph expansion consists only of Kontsevich's graphs with in-degree $\leqslant 1$ for aerial vertices. We obtain the formula $\star_{\text{aff}}\text{ mod }\bar{o}(\hbar^7)$ with harmonic propagators for the graph weights (over $n\leqslant 7$ aerial vertices); we verify that all these weights satisfy the cyclic weight relations by Shoikhet--Felder--Willwacher, that they match the computations using the $\textsf{kontsevint}$ software by Panzer, and the resulting affine star-product is associative modulo $\bar{o}(\hbar^7)$. We discover that the Riemann zeta value $\zeta(3)^2/\pi^6$, which enters the harmonic graph weights (up to rationals), actually disappears from the analytic formula of $\star_{\text{aff}}\text{ mod }\bar{o}(\hbar^7)$ \textit{because} all the $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combinations of Kontsevich graphs near $\zeta(3)^2/\pi^6$ represent differential consequences of the Jacobi identity for the affine Poisson bracket, hence their contribution vanishes. We thus derive a ready-to-use shorter formula $\star_{\text{aff}}^{\text{red}}$ mod~$\bar{o}(\hbar^7)$ with only rational coefficients.

La collecte systématique et à large échelle de ces opinions permet également d’évaluer l’impact des soins sur la santé et à quel point les soins répondent aux besoins des personnes. Les enquêtes SCAPE, introduites en Suisse en 2018, ont pour objectif de recueillir et analyser systématiquement les expériences de soins des patientes et patients atteints de cancer, fournissant des données essentielles pour améliorer la qualité des soins en oncologie. Une spécificité importante des enquêtes SCAPE est d’avoir impliqué des patientes et patients partenaires de recherche dès le début du processus de mise en place des enquêtes. Tout au long de ce partenariat, leur savoir expérientiel a été pleinement reconnu, enrichissant ainsi la qualité, la pertinence et la valeur de SCAPE. La qualité de leur engagement sera évaluée afin de valoriser leur travail ainsi que leur implication précieuse et de tirer des enseignements pour guider de futurs projets visant à améliorer la qualité des soins, en partenariat avec des patientes et patients.

Sensibilité du taurin N'dama et du zébu Goudali à l'infestation par les tiques au Sud-Ouest du Gabon

Les tiques ont un impact négatif sur la santé des animaux et la productivité des élevages. L’une des méthodes de contrôle des tiques en élevage est l’utilisation de races d’animaux tolérantes. La présente étude compare la sensibilité aux tiques du taurin N’dama et du zébu Goudali introduits au Ranch Nyanga au Gabon. Des tiques ont été collectées et identifiées sur un échantillon aléatoire de 1/10 des bovins âgés de plus de 9 mois soit 342 bovins en saison pluvieuse et 360 en saison sèche. Un total de 1772 tiques représentant deux genres ont été collectées : Amblyomma spp. (94,92%) puis Rhipicephalus spp. (5,08%). La charge parasitaire globale a été 2,52 tiques et le taux d’infestation 50,28%. Les adultes Amblyomma spp. ont été plus collectés en saison sèche et les immatures en saison pluvieuse alors que tous les stades de Rhipicephalus spp. ont été plus collectés en saison pluvieuse (p<0,05). La charge parasitaire globale et le taux d’infestation ont été plus élevés en saison sèche pour Amblyomma spp. et en saison pluvieuse pour Rhipicephalus spp, (p<0,05). Ces deux paramètres ont aussi été plus élevés chez le Goudali pour Amblyomma spp. (p<0,05), mais ont été comparables chez les deux races de bovins pour Rhipicephalus spp.. La race N’dama serait mieux adapté à l’environnement du ranch Nyanga où les tiques Amblyomma spp. sont majoritaires.

Plaie de paturon combinée à une fracture de type II de la troisième phalange chez un mulet

Un mulet adulte est présenté avec une plaie purulente sur le tiers distal et médial du paturon de son membre antérieur droit (MAD) accompagné d’une boiterie de grade 5. Une fracture de type II de la troisième phalange (P3) a été diagnostiqué par examen radiologique. Le traitement a consisté en l’administration d’antalgique, d’antibiotiques, de soins de la plaie et de la mise en place d’un bandage renforcé par chaussure à rebord remplacé par une attelle de Monkey la semaine suivante. Six (6) mois plus tard, un examen clinique de suivi a montré une nette diminution de la boiterie estimée au grade 2 et une nette diminution de douleur à la palpation.

Anna Engelhardt (1835-1903) : éditrice, traductrice, critique littéraire et plus encore

Cet article présente Anna Engelhardt, une femme quasi-inconnue en France et peu étudiée en Russie, malgré le rôle important qu’elle joua dans la vie sociale et culturelle de son pays au XIXe siècle. Elle fut à la fois rédactrice en chef, traductrice, éditrice, critique littéraire et plus encore… Née en 1838 à Saint-Pétersbourg, elle apprit très tôt plusieurs langues étrangères, parmi lesquelles le français et l’anglais. C’est elle qui familiarisa le lecteur russe avec les œuvres d’Émile Zola, de Guy de Maupassant, de François Rabelais, de George Elliot et de Louisa May Alcott. Elle fit les premières traductions de quelques oeuvres de Jean-Jacques Rousseau, de Victor Hugo, de Gustave Flaubert et d’Heinrich Heine. Elle est, en outre, l’autrice (ou co-autrice principale) d’un imposant dictionnaire allemand-russe en deux volumes, paru en 1877. L’article se concentre notamment sur ses liens étroits avec Zola et son interprétation de Rabelais, auquel elle attribuait une place particulière. Il s’appuie sur des documents conservés aux Archives centrales d’État de la littérature et de l’art de Saint-Pétersbourg et au département des manuscrits de l’Institut de littérature russe.

On complete classes of valuated matroids

We characterize a rich class of valuated matroids, called R-minor valuated matroids that includes the indicator functions of matroids, and is closed under operations such as taking minors, duality, and induction by network. We exhibit a family of valuated matroids that are not R-minor based on sparse paving matroids. Valuated matroids are inherently related to gross substitute valuations in mathematical economics. By the same token we refute the Matroid Based Valuation Conjecture by Ostrovsky and Paes Leme (Theoretical Economics 2015) asserting that every gross substitute valuation arises from weighted matroid rank functions by repeated applications of merge and endowment operations. Our result also has implications in the context of Lorentzian polynomials: it reveals the limitations of known construction operations.

Optimal Algorithm for the Planar Two-Center Problem

We study a fundamental problem in Computational Geometry, the planar two-center problem. In this problem, the input is a set $S$ of $n$ points in the plane and the goal is to find two smallest congruent disks whose union contains all points of $S$. A longstanding open problem has been to obtain an $O(n\log n)$-time algorithm for planar two-center, matching the $\Omega(n\log n)$ lower bound given by Eppstein [SODA'97]. Towards this, researchers have made a lot of efforts over decades. The previous best algorithm, given by Wang [SoCG'20], solves the problem in $O(n\log^2 n)$ time. In this paper, we present an $O(n\log n)$-time (deterministic) algorithm for planar two-center, which completely resolves this open problem.
